Links to Hearing Loss Every Parent Should Know About

Loud Noise Can Lead to Hearing Loss

Avoiding Loud Noise Can Help Prevent Hearing Loss

Just in case parents didn’t have enough to worry about when it comes to keeping their children safe, there are now two more things to worry about when it comes to your youngster’s well-being.  You may be prepared to deal with chicken pox and the flu, but the matters at hand are threatening your child’s ears and hearing aid purchases. Teens already face failing hearing tests because of the threat of excessive sound exposure from mp3 players and those lovely ear buds that get crammed into ears in every state. This time, the newly discovered bad guys, roller coasters and lead, are linked to needing digital hearing aids. Tweens may be hard to monitor during their rebellious years but this information is worth fighting over if it gets them to avoid the latest in hearing instruments accessories.

It may seem like a strange thing to suggest but in fact, how you ride on a roller coaster could lead to needing a hearing device. There have been case studies where people have been riding this amusement park ride and because they did not have their heads facing forward, they received serious trauma to the ear drum and ear canal and increased their chances for needing a hearing aid. Their inner ear was visibly bruised and upon receiving hearing tests, these individuals were shown to have hearing loss that either lasted for a short period of time or became permanent. The symptoms of the avoidable injury that leads to a lifetime of digital hearing aid wear are similar to those who survived explosions while serving in the armed forces. By having your head turned to either side as the roller coaster quickly accelerates or plummets to the ground, a person exposes their ears to a tremendous amount of force and a visit to the hearing instruments specialist. Turning your head to smile, laugh, talk, or look at the person next to you or ground below could be all that stands between your child and a hearing device.

Another cause of hearing aid usage that may not be on your worrisome radar is lead. There have been issues in the past with children’s toys and buildings being found to have lead within them and it is now been linked to children who show hearing loss after conducting a hearing test. A study was done which showed a link between lead levels and digital hearing aids but stating it as a cause has yet to be done because of issues establishing when each took place. Higher traces of lead can be present in a child’s test but until it is proven that the lead was present before the need for a hearing aid arose, it remains just a link. Lead already is shown to be harmful and so it shouldn’t be something your young one is exposed to, however, if this link to needing a hearing device has been established, then it would seem to be wise if each parent were a little more cautious about their child’s exposure to the dangerous metal.
