Hearing Aid Styles

Hearing aids come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with a wide range of prices. What determines the value of a hearing aid is not the shape or size, but the technology inside! We provide patients with a personalized experience based on their needs, lifestyle, and budget. Here are some styles we take into consideration when making a recommendation for a hearing solution.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

A solution where the hearing aid physically sits behind the ear and carries the sound into the ear through a speaker. This solution can come in many shapes and styles.

Pros:

  • Discrete.
  • Most issues can be fixed in our repair lab instead of sending it to the manufacturer.
  • Fits wide variety of hearing loss.
  • Low maintenance.
  • The hearing aid can come in different colors.
  • Rechargeable options are available.

Cons:

  • People with dexterity issues, vision difficulties, or physical disabilities may not be able to insert or wear the instrument properly.
In-the-Canal (ITC)

A solution that is shaped specifically for the patient's ear canal and the components sit inside a "shell." This solution also comes in different shapes and sizes.

Pros:

  • Fits the exact shape of the canal creating feedback resistance.
  • Easily manipulated and inserted.
  • Can be color coded for people with vision difficulties.

Cons:

  • Not very discrete.
  • Can be harder to maintain.
  • Can create wax build-up in ears.
  • If a repair is needed it often must be sent to the manufacturer and repair time takes about 1.5 - 2 weeks.
  • Some styles are not appropriate for patients with certain power requirements.
  • There is no rechargeable option currently available for custom ITC hearing aids.
Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC)

A solution that is custom made to fit invisibly in the ear.

Pros:

  • Completely discrete.
  • Some models can be worn while sleeping or even in the shower.

Cons:

  • Some models may require a specially trained professional to insert or remove the device.
  • Certain styles come with batteries that are small and may not last as long as other models, depending on usage.
  • This solution traditionally cannot fit people with severe-profound hearing loss.
  • A comfortable fit with this solution often depends on the shape of the ear canal.
